Unpad and PT Energi Nusantara Discuss Potential Coal Bead Methane


[print-g.ac.id, 29/03/2016] In an effort to develop cooperation in the field of science, technology and higher education, PT Energi Nusantara and Unpad organized meetings to discuss research results on "Coal Methane Gas Production Engineering using microbial origin of livestock waste".

In this visit Mr.Putranto,The Director of PT Energi Nusantara, was received warmly by the team of researchers Unpad namely Prof. Dr. IR. Ellin Harlia., MS, (Researcher/Implementers) and Dr. Eng. I Made Joni, M.Sc. The Director PT Energi Nusantara, said this cooperation is a form of mutual participation between PT Energi Nusantara with Unpad. His decision is based on his belief that researchers from College were able to increase the production of coal bed methane with their extensive analysis and research efforts.

Meanwhile researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), Prof. Dr. IR. Ellin Harlia., MS, explained that the purpose of this research is to obtain isolates of bacteria and to obtain a superior formula (metanogenik inokulum) as a starter in coal methane gas production. The role of methane-producing microorganism origin cattle waste coal to grow in and collaborate productively to generate methane Gas or Coal commonly known as Coal Bed Methane (CBM).

With these findings, in future Indonesia may become an alternative energy source which can meet energy crisis in the future. There are several options as an alternative replacements, one is switching to coal and this material is available on the Earth in Indonesia. Coal contains methane gas, known as Coal Bed Methane (CBM).

"Newcomer" is often interpreted as a candidate for future fuels and its existence is very promising. Coal is source power of nature that can be used to store energy. The source of the energy contained in coal is thermal energy that has very wide scope including fuel, electricity generation, and so on. In Indonesia the potential coal layers are enormous, that could be a potential content of gas utilizable methane in it. One such gas that can be used as sources of energy are methane CH4 or Coal methane gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases with predominant gas as methane (CH4) 90-95% and other gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) in very small proportion (Scott, 1993). CBM can be used as a renewable resource that could replace the role of oil and gas resources in Indonesia.

The level for Coal bed Methane in Indonesia is 453.3 trillion cubic feet (TCF). The potential of these resources is spread in Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. But the biggest potential is in South cekungan Sumatera with a reserve not less than 183 TCF (Solanki, 2007). It is intended to find out the updates and development of CBM reserves in Indonesia,which could be confidently utilized.
